Elderly woman feels sharp pain in wrist

When should I consider surgery for my wrist and hand pain?

If you are experiencing extreme pain from rheumatic diseases such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, you may be a candidate for hand surgery. You may also need hand surgery if you suffered from an injury to the hand causing a dislocated hand or ligament damage.

Other problems that may require hand surgery can occur at birth or are caused by degenerative changes to the hand. Most hand injuries develop from overuse at the workplace or from the modern generation utilizing technology too frequently. These injuries can cause a lack of mobility due to everyday wear and tear.

One particular wrist surgery we perform at our center is wrist fusions, which join the bones in the wrist to treat arthritis. Arthritis is known to cause pain and stiffness in the joints.

The surgery can either be done partially on the wrist or on the entire wrist depending on the patient’s damage to the wrist. The surgeon is proven to relieve pain and discomfort from arthritis as well as improve strength and wrist stability.

If you are a patient who has previously undergone conservative treatment for your wrist and is still unable to manage the pain – you may be a candidate for a wrist fusion. Conservative treatment for arthritis can include physical therapy, medications, or injections.

If you are suffering from carpal tunnel– otherwise identified as an inflamed median nerve, you may experience pain and a tingling, and even a numbness sensation.

Part of the hand receives sensation and movement from the median nerve which makes this injury very uncomfortable. This type of injury can result from overuse from putting constant pressure on doing one activity. In cases where the carpal tunnel space is too small, patients need surgery to repair the damage.

Just like any surgery, there is always the risk of infections – which is why at ASC of Boca Raton our minimally invasive procedures allow you to heal quicker through smaller incisions. You are able to leave the same day at our outpatient center allowing you to receive quality and convenient healthcare. Your age and type of injury as a direct effect on the type of procedure you undergo.

As always, it is important to consult a trained physician before going through any surgery to get the best solution for you.
