At ASC Boca, we specialize in minimally invasive spine surgery.  When a patient is expressing chronic pain due to herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or degenerative discs that may signal that they are a candidate for laser spine surgery.

Common Benefits:

Laser spine surgery offers several benefits due to advancements in technology and resources. It is a newer procedure than laser technology and its use began in the mid-1900s. A laser is an instrument that utilizes light to produce an amplification of light by stimulating radiation. Instead of using surgical instruments, lasers allow us to make incisions (or cuts).

By using lasers, the surgeon can target portions of soft tissue that are compressing nerves. When the patient undergoes the procedure, these tissues will either be shrunk or removed. Decompressing the nerve will aim to relieve pain allowing the patient to return more comfortably to their lifestyle.

Common Risks:

Risks of laser spine surgery can include heat damage to the surrounding nerves, bone, and tissue from the laser. Laser spine surgery will not heal or cure all of your back pain but it is proven to be very effective in largely reducing the pain experienced.

ASC Boca understands that patients do not want to undergo long procedures and lengthy hospital stays – which is why we offer minimally invasive procedures. The minimally invasive procedures not only reduce the recovery time and hospital stay but also lower the risk of complications after surgery.

In a study done by the University of Maryland Medical Center, they identified the complications of other procedures which can include but are not limited to extreme blood loss, infection, or even injury to back muscles.

During this procedure, a surgeon will use a microscope or endoscope making the incision incredibly small. For these reasons, laser spine surgery is typically a much safer procedure compared to alternative options.

In this procedure, the patient will undergo local anesthesia to numb the spine. Please note that not every patient is a candidate for laser spine surgery. A laser procedure is an excellent option for patients suffering from chronic pain conditions for which fusion is not recommended.
